The Civil Engineering Department is a recognized research centre under VTU and offers Part-time and Full-time Ph.D. and M.Sc. Engineering by Research programs. The department is committed to provide dynamic experience through its team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, which includes a blend of experienced seniors with dynamic youngsters. The curriculum is designed to integrate strong foundational concepts with practical applications, providing a holistic approach to education.

Students benefit from project-based learning, hands-on workshops, field visits, and guest lectures by industry experts. Faculty members guide student projects, encouraging innovation and technology application. State-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including Surveying, Building Materials and Testing, Concrete Technology, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Highway Engineering, and Software Application Lab equipped with advanced software’s like Autocad, E-Tabs, BIM and QGIS provide hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for industry demands.

Active participation in Student chapters like ICI, ISTE, Nirmana Forum, and the Eco Club promotes collaboration and environmental awareness. MoUs with industry partners provide opportunities for internships, industry visits, and hands-on training, bridging academic learning with real-world applications. Graduates from the department secure placements in Core companies, multinational corporations, and civil services, reflecting the department’s commitment to academic and professional excellence. Graduates have diverse career opportunities in infrastructure development, construction management, structural design, and environmental consultancy. They are sought after in government departments, multinational corporations, and consulting firms. With a focus on sustainable development and advanced technologies, the program equips students for global projects, higher education, research, or entrepreneurship in construction and allied industries.

Programme Outcomes
  • PO1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization as specified in WK1 to WK4 respectively to develop to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with consideration for sustainable development. (WK1 to WK4)
  • PO3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required. (WK5)
  • PO4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions. (WK8).
  • PO5: Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems. (WK2 and WK6)

The department in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council, organized an inspiring session titled "My Story- Motivational Session by Successful Innovators," at CSE Seminar Hall on 29th November 2024. 119 students of Fifth Semester from the Civil Engineering, Information Science, and Computer science Engineering departments participated in the event. The department in association with Mechanical Engineering Department Organized Career Development Program on Recent Technological Advancements in CRIP Sector-Project, Communicational Challenges and Techno-Managerial Opportunities on 29th November 2024 at CSE Seminar Hall. 110 students from Third and Fifth semester of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department took part in the event. The event was organized by Mr. KVR Prasad, Dr. Shivanna S., Mr. Sriram Mustapure and Ms. Veena B. G.


The department organized a 2 Day’s Workshop on “BIM using Revit Architecture” on 27th and 28th November 2024 at Civil CAD Lab. 43 Students from Third Semester took part in the event. The event was organized by Ms. Anitha J., Ms. Tamil Selvi N., Ms. Ramya N., and Mr. Sriram Mustapure.


The department had organized a Guest lecture on “Air Quality Modeling and Climate Influence" on 21st November 2024 at Faraday Seminar Hall. 59 Students Third and Seventh semester participated in the event. This event was coordinated by Ms. Vyshnavi D. R.


The department organized a Visit to Green Expo organized by International Green Building Council on 15th November 2024 at Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre. 25 Students from Third semester took part in the visit. Sunaada-The Music club under Susamskriti, the cultural Forum at Sir MVIT, organized a The Vocal Solo Showdown competition, for students on 13th November 2024, at Sir M.V. Seminar Hall, provided a platform for students to showcase their vocal talents. The event was coordinated by Ms. Ramya N., the Mentor of Music club.

The department organized a 3 Day’s Workshop on Digitalized Land Survey from 7th to 9th November 2024 at Sir MVIT Ground. 43 Students from Third semester took part in the event. The event was organized by Ms. Ramya N., Ms. Anitha J., Ms. Vyshnavi D. R., Ms. Bhavya S. and Ms. Subhadra G. D.


The department organized a 2-Day Workshop on “Evaluation of Geotechnical Properties of Soil for Foundation Design” on 13th and 14th December 2024 at Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory. 33 Students from Fifth semester took part in the event. On the occasion of Pollution Control Day Awareness Program, the Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Physics in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council, organized an Innovator Talk on “Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Alternatives for a Greener Future” on 10th December 2024 at CSE Seminar Hall. The event saw enthusiastic participation of 120 students of First semester from the Computer Science, Information Science Engineering departments. On the occasion of National Pollution Control Day, Institution’s Innovation Council, in collaboration with Alekhya-Literary club, Rangataranga-the theatre club and Spandana-Outreach club, organized a unique street play and awareness program on “Clean Air, Green Earth: A Step Towards Sustainable Living” on 10th December 2024 at New Block Quadrangle. Alekhya-Literary club organized the Online AXIOM 2.0 Intra-College Debate Tournament for Sir MVIT Engineering students on 30th November 2024 and 1st December 2024. Under the esteemed patronage of Susamkriti, the Alekhya Literary Club orchestrated an extraordinary inter-college Parliamentary Debate tournament spanning from the 24th to the 26th of May 2024. Ms. Tamil Selvi N. serves as the faculty mentor for this club.
