Late Lt. Col. Niranjan E. Kumar – ME, Lieutenant Colonel in Indian Army

Our proud alumnus, Lt.Colonel Niranjan Kumar, an elite soldier, who attained martyrdom for the motherland was born on 2nd May 1981 in Palaghat District, Kerala. His love for olive green made him to get selected in the Army and joined Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai in September 2003, after graduating from SIR M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bangalore. He got commissioned into the Corps of Engineers on 17 Sep 2004 and was posted to 10 Engineers Regiment at Tezpur, Assam. Later he went on deputation to the elite NSG and worked in its Bomb Disposal Squad.

On a fateful day, 3rd January 2016, while defusing a live grenade from the body of a terrorist, who attacked the Pathankot airbase, Lt. Col. Kumar was fatally injured by grenade splinters and shrapnels on, breathed his last. He was awarded “Shaurya Chakra” posthumously on 15 August 2016 for his indomitable spirit, act of bravery and sacrifice. Every year, on January 3rd, SIR MVIT pays homage to martyred NSG Commando, it’s proud alumni, who is symbol of great courage and sacrifice.
